Must-Try Korean Dermatology Treatments for Dry or Dull Skin

If you’re in Korea, one thing you can’t miss out on? Going to the dermatologist.

Korea has an abundance of amazing cosmetic dermatologists who focus on aesthetic dermatology such as skin care, botox, fillers, and lifting treatments. Many people in Korea attend such dermatologist regularly for skin treatments, and it can be a great form of self-care, and a powerful boost to your regular skincare routine.

Thanks to the popularity of the cosmetic dermatology industry in Korea, the prices for treatments are incredibly low compared to other countries, and more importantly, research and innovation is high – which means that in Korea you can get state of the art treatments for very affordable prices.

Since there are so many treatments to choose from, I will be doing a series introducing treatments based on their benefits.

Today, I will sharing the top treatment recommendations for dry or dull skin.

Let’s get started!

Aquapeel (also known as HydraFacial)

This is a Korean dermatologist OG – you may have heard about it on the internet or from influencers who have visited Korean dermatologists.

Aquapeel is a great treatment for a variety of skin concerns, but primarily targets blocked pores/breakouts, dullness, dryness, and uneven skin texture. It is also great for those who want overall skin maintenance. It is non-invasive and not painful at all, and many people describe the experience as relaxing, refreshing, and cooling.

How does it work?

Aquapeel is performed using a handheld machine that combines gentle suction with water-based essence infusion. Most dermatologists use a two or three step process:

1. Step 1- Exfoliation (such as AHA and/or BHA): Step 1 involves cleansing the pores and skin of excess build-up by shooting a jet of exfoliating liquid, whilst simultaneously using suction to effectively remove dead skin, blackheads and excess sebum from both the surface of the skin and deep in the pores.

2. Step 2 - Nutrition and hydration (such as vitamins, peptides, antioxidants): Step 2 involves shooting a jet of liquid packed with nutritious and hydrating goodness deep into the skin. In this step, the liquid used is often rich in vitamins, peptides, antioxidants, and humectants like hyaluronic acid. Since step 1 removed all the dead skin and clogged pores, step 2 can effectively hydrate and nourish with no obstruction.

The results?

After aquapeel, your skin will be soft, brighter, hydrated, and smooth. It is sensitive skin friendly, and doesn’t cause any irritation, so you can go about your day with no difficulty.

FAQ:

- How often can you do it? No more than once per week

- Does it cause any side effects? It is not a treatment that generally causes side effects, due to how gentle it is. However, because of the exfoliation skin may be more sensitive for a short while after, so irritating skincare should be avoided.

LDM (also known as LDM Waterdrop Lifting)

This is one of my personal favourite treatments, as it is really relaxing and helps with your overall skin health from the inside out. (It’s also a favourite of Korean celebrities!)

LDM, which stands for ‘local dynamic micro-massage’ is performed using a handpiece to gently massage the skin using ultrasound waves. The main benefits of LDM include collagen and elastic production, increased moisture in the skin, stronger skin barrier, and improved hydration and elasticity.

How does it work?

After applying ultrasound gel to the skin, the headpiece is massaged slowly across the skin, using ultrasound waves to boost your skins regeneration and hydration.

Specifically, the ultrasound waves target the dermis and epidermis at varies depths to stimulate collagen and elastin and also redistribute and attract hyaluronic acid in the skin.

The handpiece feels slightly warm as it passes across the skin, making the treatment very relaxing and soothing.

The results?

LDM offers immediate improvement in hydration and firmness in the skin, and the benefits last as it encourages the production of moisture and collagen in the skin. Post-treatment, you can expect your skin to feel moisturised, soothed, and plump.

FAQ:

- How often can you do it? Up to twice per week (most effective if done regularly)

- Does it cause any side effects? It is not a treatment that generally causes side effects, due to how gentle it is. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Some people may experience slight redness right after the treatment.

Mulgwang Injection (also known as Water Glow injection)

Mulgwang injection is a type of ‘skin booster’ that brightens, hydrates, and minimises fine lines and wrinkles.

Mulgwang injection is performed by injecting small amounts of hyaluronic acid into the top layers of the skin all over the face. Though the injection uses hyaluronic acid like fillers do, the function and effects are very different than fillers. Fillers use large particle sizes of hyaluronic acid in a more gel like formula to create volume. Whereas the mulgwang injection uses very small particles of hyaluronic acid in a watery formula – this means that it does not create any volume, but rather disperses naturally in the skin to boost hydration. The skin contains hyaluronic acid naturally, and by adding to this it helps to hydrate, boost collagen, and increase the skins ‘bounciness’.

How does it work?

Before the injections, numbing cream is applied all over the face to minimise pain from the needles. The doctor will then inject the hyaluronic acid formula in a uniform manner all over the face, and only into the superficial layers of the skin so it can provide hydration where needed most.

The results?

Mulgwang injection offers immediate hydration and minimisation of fine lines and wrinkles. By adding to the skins natural stores of hyaluronic acid, you can expect glassier, more even skin, a noticeable improvement in hydration, and reduction of fine lines as the hydration plumps the skin. In the longer term, it also helps increase collagen production.

FAQ:

- How often can you do it? Maximum once a month

- Does it cause any side effects? Since it involves injecting the skin, it is normal to have redness, needle marks, and mild swelling. Usually this resolves within a few days.

So there we have it! My top 3 recommendations for dull or dry skin that are must-tries at a Korean dermatologist.
